Wonder-Ra – CUSHION (with padding)
Growing up in the 80s, I knew from primary school age that I was different from the other boys and girls. I never truly fitted in—a misfit, if you will. It took until my teenage years to understand why.
During my childhood, I found comfort in watching cartoons. My tastes were wide and varied, and I loved escaping into their unique, magical worlds.
Looking back, my favourite characters had extraordinary powers and always triumphed over the baddies.
Two such heroes—or, in this case, heroines—were Wonder Woman and She-Ra.
As a child, I don’t remember seeing either of them in a romantic relationship. Perhaps I simply paid more attention to their adventures.
But looking back through adult eyes, I began to wonder. What if these characters found love with another superhero of the same sex? What might their lives look like beyond saving the world?
Through my artwork, I’ve tried to imagine just that. My childhood heroes and heroines finding love, sharing their lives and enjoying the freedom to be themselves.
Meet Wonder Woman
Writer William Moulton Marston and artist Harry G. Peter created Wonder Woman, who made her comic-book debut in 1941.
Also known as Diana, she comes from Themyscira, or Paradise Island, home to the legendary Amazon warriors.
Her origins and abilities vary across different versions of her story. However, Greek mythology plays a central role in her world. Her powers include superhuman strength and speed, with many versions also giving her the ability to fly.
Her signature equipment includes the Lasso of Truth and bracelets that deflect bullets.
Since her debut, Wonder Woman has appeared in comics, animated adventures, television series and films. She champions truth, compassion and equality alongside her formidable fighting skills.
Meet She-Ra
In the original 1980s story, She-Ra is the superhero alter ego of Princess Adora.
Born on Eternia to King Randor and Queen Marlena, Adora is the twin sister of Prince Adam, better known as He-Man.
The villain Hordak kidnaps her as a baby and takes her to Etheria. There, she grows up under the influence of Hordak and the sorceress Shadow Weaver.
Unaware of her true family, Adora becomes a Force Captain in the Evil Horde. Shadow Weaver’s magic helps keep her under their control.
Guided by the Sorceress of Castle Grayskull, He-Man travels to Etheria and discovers his missing sister.
Adora learns the truth and breaks free from Shadow Weaver’s spell. Raising the Sword of Protection, she calls out:
“For the honour of Grayskull!”
She transforms into She-Ra, Princess of Power, and chooses to stay on Etheria to help the rebellion fight the Horde.
Two Worlds, One Love
These heroines come from very different fantasy worlds. But what if their paths crossed and love brought them together?
Wonder-Ra imagines that possibility: two powerful women finding strength, tenderness and happiness in each other.
They spend their lives fighting for others. In this illustration, I wanted to give them something for themselves—the freedom to love.
